ISSUE 48JUNE 2008

Towards the new Colombia
Interview with Raúl Reyes
On March 1, 2008 Colombian forces, with the assistance of the US military from their base in Manta, Ecuador, launched an attack on a camp of representatives of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia – Ejército del Pueblo – FARC-EP) located in Ecuador. They were in Ecuador for the negotiation of the humanitarian exchange of prisoners. Amongst those assassinated by the Colombian forces was the revolutionary commander Raúl Reyes, a member of the Secretariat of FARC and a well known and respected international spokesperson and negotiator for FARC.

The Women of the FARC
Interview by Anna Pha
Colombia is a nightmare of human rights abuses including politically motivated killings, super-exploitation of workers and dispossession of peasant communities. While much of Latin America is now seeking solutions to the results of decades of neglect arising from the rule of privileged pro-US local elites, the government of Colombia is bogged down in a war on its own people. The bravery of the people in resisting this oppression is outstanding.
