Abolish the ABCC

The Construction Division of the CFMEU and its members have been fined over $6 million in the courts in the past two years. Their crime? Taking action to defend workplace health safety and ensure workers receive their legal entitlements. Every day, innocent trade unionists and their officials are being hounded, spied on, and subjected to intimidation by the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) and the employers it protects.

Take action!

Send a letter to Prime Minister Gillard demanding the abolition of the ABCC.

Download this sample letter.

Add your own details and cut and paste it into Gillard’s feed-back form.

Call for Cuban 5

(See current campaign for VISAs for relatives of Cuban5)

From the Consulate General of the Republic of Cuba Australia
08-09-2009

As you may know, on September 12, it will be reaching the 11 year anniversary since 5 young Cubans were unjustly incarcerated by the US government.

On this occasion we would like to thank you for the support you have given to us during all these years and also would like to take the opportunity to request an intensification of the international campaign demanding for their immediate release. We also would like to inform the American people about this case but being conscious that the international solidarity, as part of the political battle, will be what will conquer their freedom.

Different sectors of the Australian society will be receptive to our call; the university students, religious organisations, political jurists, anti-war activists, alternative press, journalists, opinion leaders and parliamentarians among others.

Even when some North American and British media have published some news about the Five, the majority of media has kept silent on the situation of Fernando, Gerardo, Rene, Ramon y Antonio therefore we consider it important to obtain as wide an audience as possible.

To obtain the right for the Five’s relatives to visit them regularly, continues being a humanitarian objective to be reached; neither Gerardo Hernández nor René González have received the visit of their spouses in eleven years, while the relatives of the other three are permanent victims of delaying manoeuvres on the Interests Section of the United States in Havana when they try to obtain their visas.

We keep you informed in this respect to try to understand the essence of this dramatic real life story that shows the double standards of the antiterrorist policy of the US administration.

To know more about the evolution of this sensible process, we would like to invite you to visit www.antiterroristas.cu where you will find updated information about the initiatives that are being developed and applied, initiatives that we put at your disposition so you can help us to multiplicate this message to those places we haven’t yet reached.

And at the same time we would like reiterate our conviction that we will liberate these men, whose only crime has been to save our people of the capital punishment that the more powerful Empire has tried to impose on us.

Because this case is a big injustice we must to intensify the struggle for their liberation, now, at new anniversary of their imprisonment.

We are secure that we count with your important support!!

They will return!!

Protect the Kimberley now!

Friends, our campaign to protect the unique Kimberley is gaining momentum but we need your help now more than ever before.

The WA Environment Minister has recently released plans for new marine parks in the Kimberley, but the Minister for Mining and Fisheries has refused to allow the parks to go ahead unless they also allow commercial fishing and oil drilling in the areas!

If the oil and gas and fishing industries get their way, 98% of the Kimberley waters will still remain open to damaging industries. We can’t let this happen!

The Kimberley has marine biodiversity values equal to the Great Barrier Reef and the area deserves the same level of protection and iconic status.

We need your urgent help to send a strong message to Premier Colin Barnett to protect the incredible Kimberley.

The WA Government must establish large network of marine sanctuaries in the Kimberley that provide real protection for its unique species, rather than leaving these areas vulnerable to overfishing and damaging industrial developments like the LNG processing hub proposed for the Kimberley coast.

To help you can:

  1. Sign the letter to the Premier and your local MP about the need for a network of large marine sanctuaries on the Kimberley coast at www.likenowhereelse.org.au.
  2. Help purchase an advertisement in the Premier’s local newspaper, calling on him to protect the Kimberley, by making a donation at www.givenow.com.au/ccwakimberleyappeal.
