Communist Party condemns bombings
Statement by the CC Secretariat of the Communist Party of Australia
on the London bombings
The Communist Party of Australia unreservedly condemns the London train and bus bombings in which more than 50 were killed and an estimated 700 innocent civilians injured. We convey our condolences and sympathy to those in London and elsewhere who have lost family members and loved ones.
We condemn all indiscriminate attacks on civilians whether carried out by extremist groups or by wars, invasion and occupation by foreign armies as in Iraq. Cruise missiles, bombings and military operations have killed hundreds and thousands of innocent citizens in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their suffering, heroism and human solidarity is largely unreported and unrecognised.
The heroism and solidarity of the ordinary working people of London and Baghdad contrasts with the responsibility of major world leaders for wars and for the so-called "war on terrorism" which, far from deterring and reducing terrorism, has stimulated more terrorist acts and is dividing peoples and nations along religious lines. This policy is a failure and has made the world less secure.
As a contribution to the elimination of terrorism we again demand that the Howard government withdraw all Australian troops from Iraq, refuse to send more troops to Afghanistan and urge all other governments to follow its example.
