Obituary
Pelagia Mavrantonis
The progressive Greek community of Sydney paid their last respects to the late Pelagia Mavrantonis, mother of comrade Steve Mavrantonis, whose funeral on August 17 was attended by many people who knew her and respected her as a staunch supporter of the cause of the working class.
Pelagia passed away at the advanced age of 93. Very early in life she, together with her late husband, Dimitri, her brothers and other members of her family, joined the National Resistance of the Greek people against Nazi occupation forces and lived through the atrocities and persecutions against all left-wing and patriotic forces of Greece, during the occupation, the civil war that followed and the extremely difficult post civil war period.
She finally made it Australia, in 1960, and lived in this country to her death. She was well known to the progressive Greek movement of Sydney for her willingness to always lend a helping hand to all campaigns and struggles of the movement, to offer her hospitality and support to all participants of the movement, especially young people, whom she affectionately regarded as her own children.
To her children and grand children the Beloyiannis Branch of the CPA and the Party’s Central Committee convey sincere condolences.
