Demonstrators mourn
three years of Iraqi dead

International and National events were held over the weekend of March 18 and 19 to mark the third anniversary of the war against the Iraqi people. These events had the common theme of "bring the troops home" and "peace for the Iraqi people". In Sydney over 1,000 people gathered to hear speeches from the Greens NSW Senator Kerry Nettle, the Rev. Ann Wansbrough of the Uniting Church, Maree O’Halloran of the NSW Teachers Federation, Rawan Abdul-Nabi of the Sydney University Peace group. The demonstration later moved off to circle around the city where it was well received by onlookers. Speakers indicated that Iraq has become a quagmire to the US which had only succeeded in bringing more misery to the Iraqi people who were persecuted by Saddam Hussein, starved by so called UN sanctions, and then bombed and shot at by President Bush’s military with assistance from Australia and the UK.
