Correction
The Guardian’s editorial of February 6 in referring to the new national secretary of the Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) stated that: "At a conference of trade union leaders held last week Mr Howes took the floor early to tell the gathering that Australia should ‘consider’ use of nuclear power — Howard’s preferred option — to deal with global warming."
The editorial claimed that "Mr Howes does not seem to have made any strong representations for renewable energy sources as a better way to combat global warming".
The Guardian editorial was in error in stating Mr Howes was speaking to the conference of trade union leaders. At that conference he did not refer to the question of nuclear issues in any way. His remarks about nuclear energy, but not made to the trade union conference, were reported in The Age (30/1/08) by journalist Tony Wright.
In speaking to the National Press Club Mr Howes said, in connection with renewable energy sources: "We can purchase carbon offsets for wind farms too and with their help, build a green manufacturing base that has meaning and, incidentally, helps save the planet."
The Guardian wishes to correct these errors.
