New Cypriot President calls for unity

Demetris Christofias has won the Presidency of Cyprus in run-off elections held last Sunday. Christofias is the leader of the Communist Party of Cyprus — the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus. He obtained 53.36 percent of the votes, defeating the conservative candidate.

Speaking at a victory rally on Sunday he said: "We have a vision, we have a history of struggle and contact with the people in our efforts to reunify our country without foreign troops. I offer a hand of friendship and co-operation to the Turkish Cypriots and their leadership. I urge them to work together with us for the common good of the people in a climate of peace."

The Communist Party of Australia is sending a message of congratulations to him and to his Party on their success.
