Poland:
Brutal repression of factory workers

On June 24, police forces brutally attacked workers of the Lucznik
factory in Radomsk who were engaged in a peaceful demonstration. The
workers were demanding the immediate payment of unpaid wages and protesting
against the economic policy of the government which was ruining their
enterprise. Many of the factory workers were injured as well as a
journalist reporting on the demonstration.

This is the second such attack by the police on workers' demonstrations.
Earlier, the police force was used against the protest actions of nurses
who were on strike and observing a hunger strike.

The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) has strongly protested against
these attacks on the basic rights of the workers.

The attacks are a gross violation of international labour standards upheld
in ILO conventions.

"The non-payment of the wages due to the workers is a criminal offence and
a flagrant violation of human rights", said the WFTU.

The WFTU expressed its complete solidarity with and support for the Lucznik
workers and the striking nurses and their just struggle.

It called upon the Polish Government to order an official public inquiry
into the police repression, to punish the guilty persons and ensure the
immediate settlement of the demands of the factory workers and the nurses.
