Martí honoured in Sydney

Cuban National Hero José Martí was honoured at Ibero-American Square in Sydney, on Tuesday May 19 in a ceremony marking the 114th anniversary of his death in combat.

The General Secretary of the CPA Dr Hannah Middleton, and other comrades as well as representatives from the Maritime Union of Australia, including the union’s Sydney Branch secretary, Warren Smith joined the ceremony. Other left and progressive organisations were also present along with members of the Latin American community in Sydney.

Cuban Consuls Nelida Hernandez and Ifrahim Miranda León led the homage, which included a discussion of Martí’s ideas, his struggle against injustice and the Spanish domination, as well as his warning vision of the monster of the North, as he described US imperialist intentions.
