Historic investment in fire fighting

Professional firefighters have welcomed the Victorian government’s announcement of extra firefighting resources for Victoria.

The Country Fire Authority is to get an extra 342 career firefighters over six years, while the Metropolitan Fire Brigade will get a further 100 career firefighters.

United Firefighters Union national secretary Peter Marshall, said the state government is to be congratulated on this move, which comes in the wake of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission Final Report.

“We congratulate the government for identifying and acting on the need for extra resources in Victoria,” said Mr Marshal.

“This is a historic investment in what was clearly an under-resourced service. It is a great day for the community and for the safety of our firefighters.”

He said it was the beginning of the reform of the fire services to provide effective service delivery to the community.

“We look forward to further reforms and are keen to work with government to achieve this. These include a review of the outdated parochial MFB-CFA boundary which sees much of Melbourne outside the MFB.

“Melbourne has long outgrown this boundary which creates artificial barriers to Melbourne having a unified fire service. Today’s boost in firefighter numbers is a step in the right direction.”
