Diabetic disgrace for Gillard

On World Diabetes Day the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Australia is outraged to hear that Prime Minister Julia Gillard has backed down on another ALP election promise, to fund preventative health care for diabetics.

The promise to roll out reform in the treatment of diabetes would have seen local GP’s paid $300 to manage the treatment of each diabetic patient.

The government has caved into the pressure from the AMA and big health corporations who oppose preventative treatment because it is not profitable.

The government’s change in policy goes in the opposite direction to the needs of diabetes patients and the majority of the Australian public.

“We must end health care for profit and introduce a health care system that helps prevent diseases like diabetes from spreading across a larger section of the Australian population,” said Communist Party of Australia General Secretary, Dr Hannah Middleton.

“The government’s decision to give the AMA a place on the Advisory Committee on Diabetes is tantamount to putting a rat in charge of looking after a block of cheese,” said Dr Middleton.

“It is further evidence that it is the AMA and big health corporations and NOT the Australian people who have the most say in Labor’s health reform agenda.”
