Issue #1511      27 July 2011

IKEA – cheap furniture, cheaper labour

Heeding a global call to action by the union representing workers at the IKEA’s “Swedwood” factory in Danville, Virginia, activists from Left Unity, a broad alliance of socialist and progressive groups and individuals, held an action at IKEA in Adelaide on Saturday July 23. The Danville workers have been facing mandatory overtime, racial discrimination, pay cuts, dangerous working conditions and pro-union workers have been fired.

The Building and Wood Workers International union declared July 18-25 “Vote for IKEA/Swedwood Union” week, and asked supporters to take photos in front of IKEA stores holding a sign entitled “I Vote for IKEA/Swedwood Union”. The union asked that people involved in the actions send through an image that could be placed on their website and also sent directly to the workers in Danville to show there is international support for their struggle.
