Poem

Everything Must Press

War is not unspeakable.
It is singing its mortal song,
its searing shrapnel
an aria of torn flesh,
its cluster bombs
a string section
of mutilation.

(Everything must press
upon your consciousness –
a rivulet of water
becomes the slick
thickness of blood)

War is utterable.
It is an unstoppable
wail of grief,
a barrage of defiance
as sovereignty
is slaughtered.

(Everything must press
upon your consciousness –
a flush of dark flowers
becomes bruised flesh)

War is deeply –
articulate
Deploy
Assassinate
Collateral
Blame
Disease
Terror
Profit
Market
Exchange
Recession
Crisis

(Everything must press
upon your consciousness –
like heat emanating
from a bomb crater
the warmth radiates
from your son’s body)
