Issue #1562      29 August 2012

Workers unpaid, terminated

The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) is concerned to have discovered that workers on the multi-million dollar Moree Police station, in the NSW north west, have not been paid. Some have not received any money for weeks.

The union understands that the problem has arisen from an ongoing disagreement between the principal contractor – Lahey’s Construction and the formwork/steel-fixing sub-contractor Bianco Constructions over payments and that Bianco Construction’s contract has been terminated leaving approximately 15 workers out of work.

“This is yet another example where due diligence has not been applied,” says state organiser, Jim Hutcheon.

“The union is concerned that employees have lost their job through no fault of their own. These workers are effectively stuck in Moree as they have no money to go anywhere. The union is trying to assist them to find alternative work on the project as there is still substantial work to be done. This is a very poor outcome in an area which needs work,” Hutcheon stated.

“There needs to be transparency and accountability here. We hope that the newly announced inquiry into construction company collapses and insolvency in the industry, and the establishment of a taskforce to look into government procurement policy, will result in positive reforms.”
