Issue #1567      3 October 2012

Call from Bougainville

Dear Bougainville Supporters,

We are organising a shipping container to go to Bougainville to assist the Hako Women’s Collective in North Buka. Below is a list of the items that are needed to fill the shipping container.

If you can donate any of the goods below then please call us on 0401 085 412 or 02 9568 3318. We look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks.

Books for Buka

There is no bookshop or public library in Buka, and access to the internet is limited. Books that provide reliable information, or assist with developing literacy or other skills, are needed.

Resources for early childhood and early literacy and numeracy are especially welcome, as the kindergartens are generally established and run by local people who are not trained teachers. However, resources for all ages and skill levels will be valued and well used.

Resource Centre

We are collecting materials in Sydney for a planned Resource Centre. Items needed include:

Office storage furniture, cupboards, filing cabinets, storage boxes, shelving, any office storage systems and/or stand alone items.

Tables and chairs, office tables and chairs, dining tables, folding chairs or stackable plastic chairs for participants in dining and training hall, stationery, office equipment paper, staples and staple guns, paper clips, rulers and pens, markers, paints, brushes, pencils, rubbers, office trays etc, scanners and printers, laminating machines and sheets, etc. notice boards, white boards, office display boards, etc.

Computers:

Set of 10-20 for teaching (i.e. same model) – laptops if possible as they will need to be locked away when not in use.

Trade tools for carpentry, mechanics, electrics, solar and alternative power systems. Sewing machines (non electric). Fabric and other sewing materials, sewing kits, patterns, needles, scissors etc.

Kitchen equipment. Eating and serving utensils, utensils for catering for conferences and training for 30-40 participants at a time.

Bedding, single beds etc. Linen, mattresses, pillows.

Curtains or drape material to make curtains for the bedrooms (for privacy).

Sporting equipment such as volleyball nets and balls, netball, basketball, soccer, rugby.

DVDs, CDs, books, encyclopaedias, library books etc.

Other help needed:

Shipping materials to Bougainville is a cumbersome and expensive process. If you can help with any aspects of the logistics, or with fundraising for the shipping container and transport, we would be delighted to hear from you.
