Manus Island

As the Guardian went to press reports were coming in of yet another protest at Manus Island during which three people have been shot, one fatally and another in a critical condition. In all 77 people have been reported injured at the Detention Centre in Papua New Guinea. Two have been airlifted to Australia for treatment.

In press conference in Darwin Immigration Minister Scott Morrison, as usual evasive and contemptuous, at one point responded to a question by saying the GS4 private security company at the camp would be releasing a statement: a private security company is now making statements on government policy.

The government now has more blood on its hands. The illegal policy of remote and offshore indefinite and brutal detention of people seeking asylum, with its violation of international law, must become the focus of active protest as part of a growing opposition to the Abbott government’s reactionary agenda more broadly.
