Hard-working organiser hit with fine

Comrades and supporters of Jimmy O’Connor formed a guard of honour for the CFMEU organiser when he entered the Federal Court in Adelaide last Thursday. Jimmy was sued by the Abbott’s Fair Work Commission (FWBC) for trying to secure employment for a local worker.

The CFMEU has been targeted by the FWBC as part of its anti-union, anti-worker drive across the country. The following day, the court handed down a $12,000 fine on Jimmy and ordered the CFMEU to pay the hefty costs for his prosecution. Outside the court, CFMEU state secretary Aaron Cartledge said the CFMEU would continue to advocate on behalf of its members.

“This issue is too important to walk away,” he said. “The CFMEU has always looked after its members and will continue to do so.”
