Issue #1731      May 18, 2016

Well done and thank you!

The Communists submitted their application to register the party with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) last month. The required minimum number of members was exceeded comfortably and the Party will be registered after the completion of the relevant processing. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those who gave their support to our registration. A special thanks is in order for those people who rallied others to join. There is obviously a lot of support out there for Communists to be able to participate in elections with the same rights as the pro-capitalist parties. The Party is determined to see the process of registration through in order to put Communist policies before the people.

Unfortunately, because an early election has been called for July 2, the AEC must stop all work on the processing of parties’ applications for registration. Without registration the name and logo of the Party cannot appear on the ballot paper, only the names of candidates. In view of the difficulties this would present for identifying Party candidates with the Communists’ campaign on the ballot paper, we have decided not to run at the forthcoming federal election. We will continue to build our capacity to field candidates and carry out professional election campaigns. In the meantime, we hope you will continue to show us your solidarity and support as we engage in grass-roots campaigns and future local, state and federal elections.
