CPA Statement

The peace agreement for Colombia

The Communist Party of Australia welcomes the signing of the six-point general agreement for an end to the armed conflict between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP) and the government of Colombia (see Colombia – “We have peace”).

The agreement, negotiated in Havana during a lengthy process encouraged by the government of Cuba and supported by the international community, offers hope to the people of Colombia at a crucial time in their country’s history. The re-entry of the FARC-EP to the political sphere will change the current balance of political forces and make possible further gains for a people ground down by neo-liberalism and a war on their interests.

The people of Colombia will continue to need solidarity to ensure that the undertakings for reform made by the government are fulfilled. The armed conflict created over 9,500 political prisoners who must be released. This includes Simon Trinidad – a member of the FARC-EP Peace Delegation. Right-wing paramilitaries will have to be disarmed and disbanded.

The CPA expresses its solidarity with the FARC-EP and wishes its leadership and combatants every success on their X National Conference to be held in September.

The CPA congratulates the FARC-EP on its achievements towards peace with social justice.
