Dedicated to peace, justice, compassion

Eulogy for Margot Salom by Ray Bergmann

Margot Salom possessed a beautiful loving heart, great intelligence and a wonderful sense of humour. A devoted mother and grandmother, she also dedicated her time and energies to many organisations based on the ideals of peace, justice and compassion, such as the Refugee Claimants Support Centre in Brisbane, the Womens International League for Peace and Freedom, Just Peace, Believing Women for a Culture of Peace, Jews Against the Occupation, Palestinian and Jewish Unity, and Just Peace for Palestine.

Margot Salom at a COTA (Council on the Ageing) forum in 2012.

Margot supported these causes with all her energy, enthusiasm, commitment and compassion, and was an inspiration for all who devote themselves to justice and human rights.

Here is a modernised version of the Jewish Mourners Prayer especially dedicated to Margot:

“Beyond all blessings, hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world for the repair of injustice, may there flow abundant peace from heaven for us and for all humanity, Amen.”

Margot’s generosity of spirit, strength of intellect, and her labours for peace and justice find reflection in ancient verses from the biblical Book of Prophets praising the woman of worth:

“She stretches her hand to the sick and to the needy. Strength of character is her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the law of loving-kindness is on her tongue. Her children see her happy when she sees them happy, and her husband finds the true meaning of worthiness in her example. May she benefit in eternity from the fruit of her hands which brought benefit to so many. May her works be rewarded by the loving Universal Spirit of Compassion into whose care we entrust her soul, so that she be sheltered for evermore, her spirit resting in the peace of eternal life. Amen.”

The Peace and Justice Movement lost a champion of Human Rights in Margot Salom. The Communist Party acknowledges her tremendous contribution to the unity of Palestinian and Jewish Community members who stood in support of a peaceful world and against those who would divide us over race and culture.

We express our sincere condolences to her family and friends. She will be missed as those who can truly unite those from a diversity of backgrounds and for a better world.
