Commemorate the Russian Revolution

All over the world, people are preparing to celebrate the centenary of the Russian Revolution. The largely bloodless uprising took place on November 7 (October 25 in the pre-revolutionary Julian calendar) and changed the world forever. It inspired other socialist revolutions, national liberation struggles and spelled the end of the old colonial system. It gave fresh impetus to the many strike and other struggles in Australia, such as the rail strike of 1917, and even had an impact on the second plebiscite that defeated moves to impose conscription during WW1.

In Adelaide, local people are preparing to mark the momentous event. A committee of community activists is holding a celebration featuring singers, dancers and speakers from trade unions and political parties on Saturday October 28 between 4pm and 8pm at the Semaphore Workers’ Club, 93 the Esplanade, Semaphore.

Multicultural food and entertainment will be features of the event. ABC Radio personality Peter Goers will speak at the gathering.

“We felt the centenary of this epoch-making event had to be celebrated,” committee member Bob Briton said. “Workers in just about every country benefitted from the breakthrough made by the workers and peasants of Russia.”

“It showed people weren’t bound to suffer autocracy, poverty and illiteracy. Many of the gains made by Australian workers over many decades, under threat again today, were possible because of the victory of the Great October Socialist Revolution,” fellow committee member Mike Williss said. “Our celebration on October 28 will be a fitting tribute.
